I have never read any other Commissaire Adamsberg mysteries, though Goodreads tells me that this is the ninth (!) I have reached the end of another amazing Commissaire Adamsberg mystery. Great character studies throughout.At first I didn’t think this would be my sort of book - given to me by a colleague who read it on a flight, I figured it was a poorly-written paperback and let it sit on my shelf for three years. When I type that in this is what I get but I like this better than The Furious Army which is how I would translate the French....!! As the chief of police in Paris’s seventh arrondissement, Commissaire Adamsberg has no jurisdiction in Ordebec. Until now. A historian and archaeologist by profession, she is now a bestselling novelist. That might sound strange considering I haven't read it in French, but the overall feel of the novel suggests to me that the translation has worked, if that doesn't sound too strange a comment to make! This makes them feel like real people, regardless of how weird the lot of them are. Vargas was the winner of the inaugural British Crime Writers’ Association Duncan Lawrie International Dagger for her novel The Three Evangelists…. However, once I got into the swing of things I really started to appreciate the wonderful characterisations, the complexities of an unusual case, and the fact that other investigations were going on at the same time. I enjoyed the whole ensemble of characters, Paris, and the trip to the countryside of Normandy. I like Vargas' writing, and I find myself wanting to like the books, but in each, there's at least one major flaw I just can't get past. Oh, the wonderful characters!

Adamsberg, the protagonist, is intellectually-humble, though he has every reason not to be. The mysteries were secondary, as usual, since no logical problem-solving can be applied when Adamsberg is involved. At first I was unsure whether something had been lost in translation in terms of the humour, but having now finished the novel I do feel that the translation is faithful to the tone of the original.
