Recommended: Why North Korea's Air Force is Total Junk The biggest talking point of the Type 055 in popular outlets is its massive VLS array. In fact, to someone who is a total outsider, all three ships look the same with minor differences here and there.
I haven't been following Burke Flight III news recently. And, these weren’t necessarily high explosive warheads, they could be nukes to.The USN was using twin arm launchers which were severely limited in their rate of fire. Realistically, a Tico only carries 80 SAMs with Anti Submarine Rocket (ASROC) & Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) making up the rest.
Plus its cheaper to maintain one cruiser/destroyer class than having two.
The Royal Australian Navy has long been a small force that's able to punch above its weight. 3; USS Zumwalt: From Being the Best to Barely Practical; Tanks & their Tanked Future; Top Posts. The Hobart-class destroyer is basically half of an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer. Or is the pressure for VLS coming from land attack missiles? True...but apart from money shortages the Spruances did not have anything else to offer that the Burkes could not do, the Burkes can do a whole lot more and they have more stealth features too. In general, even building the Flight IIIs are speculation, between now and 2013 it is "possible" to design a new ship (if funding is available). I haven't been following Burke Flight III news recently.
The Burke is a low end ship? Frigate vs Destroyer . This allowed using different weapons for targets located by different sensors.A single Ticonderoga could thus deal with missiles fired byConsidering each CVBG had a mix of Ticos & several Spruance class destroyers. These missiles are kept at the ready & can be fired at a moment’s notice for defense or offense.
Personally I don't. Well I sure hope the Flight III is not. Also, the new AMDR on Flight III Burke class vessels would further improve the chances of surviving a saturation attack since they can guide many more missiles being an AESA compared to the PESA SPY-1.Since the trend setting by USN major surface combatants we have had other navies follow suite.
These vessels were supplemented by over 200 Soviet air force bombers like the Tu-16 & Tu-22M which could carry 2-3 Anti Ship Missiles (AShMs) each. Two 5in guns means nothing to me, in fact guns on ships are meaningless IMHO, they should replace guns with more VLS. It means that a family of missiles or different missile designs modified to fit inside a standard canister. You have a good point, since the Spruance were the last true destroyers. The Sprucans were fairly cheap to operate and performed mission sets that you would rather not use a Burke or Tico for. The aim was to use a mixture of assets to execute a tactic called saturation attacks. So the true engagement capacity was never 60 targets but multiple of 3 or 4 depending on how many targets can AN/SPG-62 illuminate or how many missiles can it guide.Emergence of Active Radar Homing or ARH missiles like SM-6 & Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) allow every missile to engage a different target irrespective of illumination. From what I've read so far, the Flight IIIs could be an an Atago/Sejong the Great combination with AMDR.
And how many missiles are necessary for a cruiser/destroyer to perform their mission? So, what do you do? ESSM has become such a powerful missile in its own right and quad packing massively increases capacity. The Atagos have command facilities and the Sejongs have vls space for 128 missiles (quad-packed essms not factored in). But I have nothing to support this. The Arleigh Burke class was designed with an all-new hull form, incorporating much of the Spruance class (DD 963) destroyer propulsion and machinery plant, and the integrated Aegis Weapons System (AWS) proven on the Kidd class (DD 993) destroyers and installed on the larger Ticonderoga … Vertical Launch System was actually a small component of the Aegis Combat System which tied in all sensors on the vessel through sensor fusion.
