He suggests that Aethelflaed is killed; Aethelred sends Aldhelm to do the deed. Edward sees how Uhtred instantly commands the trust of the Mercians. Uhtred gives Skade to Haesten instead of Aethelflaed on condition that he retreats from the Abbey.

Pyrlig is sent to inform Edward. Uhtred goes to Saltwic, where his daughter, Stiorra, Aethelflaed’s daughter, Aelfwynn, and Edward’s first son, Aethelstan, reside. He accepts the appointment but as his first act relinquishes the throne in favour of Aethelflaed. Father Beocca reveals his love for Thyra.
