Incredibly intimate and rather comforting in nature, some might say it’s a loose Beatles track, but really it picks up where he left off on 1970’s For the 2011 re-issue, as part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection, the original remastered record’s been packaged with an assortment of bonus tracks.
I am of course referring to “Coming Up”, the kick-off track and the first single released from the album. “Summer’s Day Song” has a kind of mellontron-ish ‘Strawberry Fields’ vibe, which only serves to remind you how impeccably untouchable the latter song is. Not horrendous, but not memorable in any way unless you like songs that reference polar bears. H Atom” is a punky stomper comprised mostly of a couplet chanted by Linda McCartney. The lyrics are banal, the music stilted and unmemorable. On closing track, “One Of These Days”, McCartney coos over some delicate strumming, “One of these days, when my feet are on the ground/I’m gonna look around and see,” perhaps alluding to the album’s personal construction. Paul’s straining, affected vocalizations over the annoying chorus will make you want to kick a pigeon. It’s an exercise in sanity, really.But McCartney doesn’t keep the mad scientist act up. The studio version hit #2 in the UK and was also released as a dance track in the US, but to a rather tepid response.I like both versions, although the live track is infinitely superior. Save for “Coming Up”, which still feels like a Wings track (the dancehall-ready tune debuted originally in Wings’ setlists), the whole of the album meanders between funky Macca jingles or just downright weird experiments. Awful, painfully embarrassing song. Regardless, Paul judiciously decided to pare it down to a single LP, and in May of 1980 McCartney II was released to some of the worst reviews Paul had ever received. Paul went back to his farm in Scotland, pondered his next move, and decided to go ahead and release the roughly 20 songs he had recorded the previous summer.
