Dorgo is an interesting and likable character as well as all the other characters he encounters. In the end, Isabelle-Marie pushes her children- Anne away, and walks to the track with the intention of suicide. There are some very chilling scenes within the book.This is the first edition, published in 2011 by iUniverse. As the torn spirit of Isabelle-Marie returns to her unwanted home, she finds that Louise is being controlled by Lanz, and has chosen him over Patrice. The world that Blais’s characters inhabit is dark and loveless. Cutting out most of their humor and ratcheting up the volume, the group turns out seven songs that alternate between thundering rockers and sludgy introspection. Louise, recognizing Isabelle-Marie’s inner ugliness, also ignores her. "Valdar is city of swordslingers and necromancers, witch cults and half-human races...This is my city. His sister, Isabelle-Marie, is not beautiful; wounded by her mother’s indifference, her feelings of envy toward her brother begin to overwhelm her.
All six of the stories featured, “Mad Shadows”, “The Secret of Andaro’s Daughter’s”, “The Moonstones of Sor Lunarum”, “The Man Who Loved Puppets”, “In the Vale of the Black Diamond”, and “Blood on the Moon”, center around the adventures of one central character, Dorgo.This is just the sort of short story collection that I love to read.

Dorgo himself is a lovable rogue, and ex soldier, down on his luck, who sails close to the wind and only just manages to stay this side of the law as an investigator of all things "strange" - a position he finds himself in after being gifted a magical dowsing rod from a Yongarloo shaman.
A recommended read.I've published a number of short stories, and authored five novels, and five screenplays. Mad Shadows ILPS 9119 released September 1970. He abandons both of them and disappears from their lives. Welcome back. . Joe blends pulp fiction and fantasy effortlessly and his characters are wonderful. Throughout their childhood, Patrice's beauty is often complimented and Isabelle-Marie is often ignored. Within these characters, outer beauty reflects no truth about their inner beauty, and their love for others is delusional.
A harrowing pathology of the soul, Mad Shadows centres on a family group: Patrice, the beautiful and narcissistic son; his ugly and malicious sister, Isabelle-Marie; and Louise, their vain and uncomprehending mother. Patrice is sent to an insane asylum by Louise, who becomes fed up with his incompetence, however he escapes shortly afterwards. Ultimate Spinach
