Reading an assessment by a cozy expert gives me a better idea if I want to read these books. We saw it on Acorn, a service that is available through Amazon or on its own that is a good place for Americans to catch British television. For those who live in larger areas, I think you might find that your library has the video sets for borrowing. My husband loves her too.I have watched and enjoyed Vera on Acorn. I wait eagerly for each new season to be released here in the U.S. I’ll have to check it out sometime soon.Just in case you had missed it, “Midnight, Texas,” based on Charlaine Harris’ series by the same name, will be premiering on NBC July 25 at 9/10C. Brenda Blethyn is excellent! I actually like the premise of Ann Cleeve’s series with George Palmer-Jones and his wife very much, and read them when I can. It’s since been “discovered” and is now twice the size, “sigh.” I think that book was the only one she set there.I have watched Vera off and on and now that I have Britbox I can watch episodes 3 and 4 plus episodes 7 to 9; my question is “are Vera and Joe related?” I saw the shows on PBS and I got the impression that they are mother and son….can you enlighten me. She couldn’t be more humble or down-to-earth.Ellen, several people have said the same thing about Ann Cleeves being very approachable. Vera (played beautifully Brenda Blethyn) is usually seen donning a rumpled overcoat – somewhat reminiscent of Columbo’s.

So far, I’ve only read the first Vera book and plan on reading others. I stayed for 2 years!Anne D, WOW! .

And thanks for the suggestion for Grantchester!Well rats! Another cracking series is The Inspector Lynley Mysteries (also not necessarily a cozy) It’s based on the novels of Elizabeth George. Vera is a Detective Chief Inspector heading an office of detectives. She often asks questions, but doesn’t listen to the answers since she’s off on another tangent.During the first four seasons, Vera was very capably shadowed by Detective Sergeant Joe Ashworth (David Jean). They were almost “equals” which doesn’t happen very often with Vera. There are no female characters of whom I can write. Have been watching the Vera series as they’ve been released on DVD, from the library.Wow, I’m surprised and impressed to see a post by Sheila Connolly. I did sort of suspect that it might not actually be on NetFlix for streaming, since a lot of streaming companies (both NetFlix and Acorn, for example) try to get exclusive rights to more “niche” shows like this when possible to avoid it being on a competitor’s service at the same time.Vera also is on Hulu. Also streaming on Acorn TV except yesterday I was ready for Season 3 and couldn’t find it on Acorn. I don’t keep up with what is on Hulu since I don’t have it myself. So many good shows on Acorn – I’m thinking I’m going to have to invest in a subscription.Barbara, we’ve definitely found an Acorn subscription worthwhile. We’ve enjoyed the Vera show for years, rewatching it on PBS, now on Acorn, we love Acorn.

Actress Liz Dawn, who plays Vera Duckworth in 'Coronation Street', will leave the soap before Christmas due to ill health. Television and film work I also read the Jimmy Perez series, although the main character’s actions once made me almost want to stop reading that series. I’ve stumbled across the series a number of times (I think it’s on NetFlix) but have never watched it. So a few ideas for your June reading pleasure.Rob, unfortunately I don’t know if Vera has made it to American cable.

Anyway, found it on Amazon for only $8 so just bought it.You might try Shetland which is also from books by Ann Cleeves. I realize you are talking about the TV programs, but until the time I have a chance to watch some of those (which I have not chosen to do), I am glad for a glimpse into whether or not I want to try the books.Merrilee, I certainly hope you enjoy the books, despite the fact that they’re a little less Cozy than most of what I normally recommend on the site!I did not start the series from the first book, didn’t know there was a series when I found out I started with the first book. I find them all far more interesting than those shown in America. Your review and description of Vera have definitely made me anxious to watch the shows as well as read the books!Patti, it’s definitely interesting to hear that it might be on Netflix – we let our own subscription lapse some time ago, but I’m sure it’ll be helpful for many others! Sometime the stories are a little dark, but the acting and tale are masterful! It went from season 2 to 4.

(Who doesn’t love an overweight frumpy middle aged woman who calls everyone “pet” and runs a police department?)
