I enjoyed this book for the characters, rather than for the plot, which I'm afraid I saw coming.
Disclaimer: Right from the start, I should admit that I'm not really into "whodunnit" books that usually follow the pattern of "first 10 pages - murder, next 150 pages - pieces slowly fall into place, closing 50 pages - the description of closing the case." At least I'm consistent.Goodness gracious. Frustrated by his department's repressive handling of security for the G8 summit in Genoa, Montalbano seriously considers resigning.
Difficile cataminarsi in quel cafarnao di giorno, figurarsi alla splapita luce di un lampione! I just read this again and was about to write exactly the same thing. occasionally you need a strong stomach (p 212 in this book), but graphic details are sparing and used like herbs in the hands of an expert chef. It wasn't a proper "police" procedural as most of the events were carried out outside Inspector Montalbano's remit. First, Salvo goes for a swim and happens upon a body. It ends up being about a small boy Montalbano encounters who is later murdered. he is smart, funny . If this were the only Montalbano I'd read, I wouldn't go back for more - it isn't in my view one of the better ones.4.5 stars. Possibly there might be a resurfacing of one particular character (who never directly appears in As always with Camilleri, this was an enjoyable read following Montalbano's investigation of two separate crimes that ultimately converge. The serious issue of human trafficking is made bearable interspersed as it is with scenes of the day to day working of the police station told with Camilleri's trademark wry humour.
Although written a good few years ago this book is quite topical due to its references to the refugee crisis in Europe.
Now, on holiday, I have decided to enjoy the books by Camilleri. They are certainly not as dour and depressing as other detective series - Montalbano is miserable but not in the destructive way of so many fictional detectives - although I'm not sure the mixture of eccentric characters and comedy always blends well with the more grisly aspects.
Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano is no archetypal Sam Spade nor is he a loving, bumbling buffoon.
