I believe it makes light of a very real spiritual and emotional turmoil occurring within the life of the disciple and within countless people throughout history. The Beloved disciple John records this exchange between the Risen Lord and Thomas which follows: "Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." Doubting Thomas may have become a saint, but what hope is there for me, or for you?I was reading a story recently about a woman in her 30’s who one day had this overwhelming spiritual experience. And he says “peace be with you”. I wonder if the next Sunday he thought about not going back. Sometimes she even questioned the existence of God. Live out this reality of mercy and you will live by a knowledge that the world cannot give because its origin is not of the world but of heaven!” Divine mercy must be received and it must be lived. Yet the tradition tells us that this so called "doubting Thomas" died a martyr for his faith. DOUBTING THOMAS ENCOUNTERS THE RISEN LORD The first Easter Sunday morning was a time of indescribable joy - Jesus had risen from the dead. Because of all of them he’s the one I think most of us can relate to. It is worthwhile to note that when our Lord appears to the disciples (both without Thomas present and then with him present) he passes through locked and shut doors and says, Through the resurrection there is now another way. His insistence on touching the Holy Wounds presented the Disciple John another opportunity to explain for all of us the implications of the Bodily Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christian tradition holds that he set sail for India and was the first to spread the Christian there. Surely it was not by chance that this chosen disciple, was missing in the first place? That’s the life of doubt, and that’s the life of faith. Doubting Thomas? And maybe he went back because he had loved Jesus so much that he needed to hear them talk about him, even if he wasn’t so convinced it was true yet.
