Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is billed as an inspirational comedy, probably by the Brits. -SPOILERS INCLUDED- Lightweight romantic fantasy about two people meeting while participating in a project to bring salmon farming and fishing to Yemen. Didn't like the very last scene though ... they should have left that on the cutting room floor & ended with the next to the last scene which would have been a natural ending. Delightful modern tale of heroes and heroines achieving for the greater good. But the soldier boy subplot is horribly manipulative and the ending ridiculously contrived. Alfred tells Harriet he will indeed stay and help them rebuild. The acting was superb as well, and it's impossible not to root for this couple to get together. His absence fuels the potential personal feelings of Blunt for McGregor as they work together to make the project a success. The cut throat government press secretary, out to protect the interests of the prime minister. But never we mind our pretty minds about that... instead, we'll put some pretty British actors in a rom-com based on a billionaire's fancy in diverting critical resources for his hobby. It is very rarely that a film is as good as the book it is based on but this is one of those films.

It's a lovely story and even if it wasn't plausible, I wouldn't know, it made a good film. Alfred resigns his government job to continue with the project. It is just too bad with the obligatory bedroom scenes although by today's standards they were quite tame. His character makes little sense and seems shoehorned in. Another contrast is the super efficiency of the high-end business contrasted with the easy-going style of both chief advisor and client. There's too much obvious "raising the stakes" in the formulaic screenplay, trying to make it all "big" and tying it in with world events. This review is based on having watched the film at home on Blu-Ray with my family. In his review in the Blunt and McGregor are two of the most gifted and attractive actors working today, able to play off each other with great style, and when they invest themselves in these amusing characters they bring to life the film's very contrived plot.The film received some negative reviews. He has little say in the matter, however, when the government gets involved, determined that a story like this might help to demonstrate good relations between the United Kingdom and the Middle East.Once in the Yemen, Jones’ cynicism is slowly chipped away by the Sheikh’s contagious optimism and faith.
