As I grew up in a small town in the South in the 70s and 80s, the film actually captured the mood and setting surprisingly well. His reality is that of the artist who puts together words and images to make a feeling, and hers is him.

He is a good actor and I didn't know he was a musician until I saw it.As for the movie, I didn't know anything about it or the book, before watching. It's interesting, not fascinating, intriguing, not electrifying.
